FATHER ARSENIE BOCA

A GREAT ORTHODOX AND HARISMATIC PERSONALITY OF ROMANIA

Being gifted with exceptional spiritual and ecclesiastic gifts, he has had a huge influence on the Romanian Orthodox people.

He was born in Vața de SusRomania, died at the Sinaia Monastery and was buried at Prislop Monastery in Silvașu de Sus.

His tomb at the Prislop Monastary is one of the most popular places of pilgrimage in Romania.

***

FATHER ARESENIE BOCA studies at the ”Avram Iancu” High School in Brad (Hunedoara County), graduating in 1929, as a top student in his class. Between 1929-1933 he attends the Theological Academy in Sibiu, where he is recognized as an elite student, painter and flute performer. He receives a scholarship from Nicolae Balan, the Archbishop of Transylvania, to study at the Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Here he attends the anatomy classes of professor Francisc Rainer and the lectures on Christian Mystics of professor Nichifor Crainic. At that time he helps Father Dumitru Staniloae with the translation into Romanian of the Philokalia, creating the graphics for the first four volumes.

He is made deacon on 29 September 1935 by Mitropolit Nicolae Bălan. In 1939 he is sent by his bishop to travel to Mount Athos in Greece, for documentation and spiritual experience. After spending four months at the Prodromos Hermitage on Mount Athos, he enters monachism at the Brancoveanu Monastary at Sambata de Sus (Brasov County) where he is ordained priest and abbot. As abbot he embellishes and renovates the buildings of the monastery and also enriches its spiritual and cultural life. In 1948 he is arrested and persecuted by the Securitate, the regime’s secret policy. In 1952 he is being convicted and sent into to forced labor, for nine months at Ocnele Mari and The Canal. The Prislop Monastary is abolished in 1959 and converted into a retirement home. All nuns are expelled and Father Arsenie is forbidden to serve here. He retires with a small pension in 1968 and starts painting the church at Draganescu. From 1968 to 1989 he holds a small cell and workroom at a newly established monastic settlement in Sinaia.

He is buried at the Prislop Monastary. Believers gather in increasing numbers at his tomb, and pray to him for healing and well being.

Thousands of pilgrims from all over Romania come to see his grave every day.

Hundreds of confessions about miraculous healings have been published in numerous books.

People say they are being heard, helped and healed by God, through the intercession of Father Arsenie Boca.
